Severstal has begun construction of the main facilities of the iron ore pellet production complex in Cherepovets
Severstal has begun construction of the central hub facilities of the pellet production complex at the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works (CherMK, Severstal’s key asset). Work is underway to erect the roasting, pelletizing and grinding buildings, the main control post building, as well as desulphurization and desulphurization facilities.
The investment project worth 97 billion roubles is aimed at introducing a technology for producing high-quality steel with a low carbon footprint in the Vologda Region. The commissioning of the complex involves changing the technological process of working with iron ore raw materials and producing cast iron.
“A facility of this type will be the first in Russia, and in terms of capacity and productivity (10 million tonnes of pellets per year) – the largest in the world. Severstal plans to provide its own iron ore raw materials (pellets) to the blast furnace production of CherMK and to decommission a number of existing units that have a negative impact on the environment. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as a result of changes in pig iron production technology will amount to more than 2 million tons per year, and pollutants – 96 thousand tons per year. At the same time, the project for the construction of the complex provides for solutions that ensure effective environmental protection through the use of the best available technologies. The commissioning of the facility is scheduled for 2026. The project is being implemented according to schedule. Construction and installation work has now begun on the site, working documentation is being developed and the main process equipment is being delivered,” commented Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of the Severstal Russian Steel Division and Resource Assets. Severstal will purchase equipment and construction materials within the framework of the project worth about 20 billion rubles from domestic companies with priority loading of enterprises in the Vologda Region. A significant part of the work on the formation of the pile field has already been completed by companies in the region of CherMK’s presence. The concrete foundation for the building where the incineration machine, the key facility of the future complex, will be located has begun to be poured at the site. The total volume of work on the foundations of the entire complex will be more than 85 thousand cubic meters.
Severstal is actively using the company’s internal expertise in the implementation of its largest investment project. Severstal-Project LLC is the developer of the working documentation and the main designer. The construction of the buildings and structures of the new workshop requires the manufacture of more than 33 thousand tons of metal structures. The Severstal Steel Solutions group of companies (a specialized enterprise of Severstal, specializing in the design and manufacture of metal structures for industrial and civil construction) is participating in the deliveries.
