Record lithium concentration recorded at Kovykta field
A water sample analysis showed a content of 725 mg of lithium in 1 cubic dm of water.
The Kovykta field (Irkutsk region) was included in the Russian Book of Records for the highest lithium concentration in the world at a gas condensate field. The corresponding certificate was received by the Lithium integrated project office, formed on the basis of Gazprom Invest and responsible for the implementation of the Kovykta development.
A water sample analysis taken in 2023 from one of the wells of the Kovykta gas condensate field showed a content of 725 mg of lithium in 1 cubic dm of water. Having studied the results of the laboratory study, experts from the Russian Book of Records determined that such a concentration of this metal at the gas condensate field is a world record, the press service of Gazprom reports.
Lithium is widely in demand in various industries, including the production of batteries for electronic equipment and electric vehicles. Read about the world’s lithium resources in the special project Lithium of the World.
The Kovyktinskoye gas condensate field is the basis for the formation of the Irkutsk gas production center and the resource base for the Power of Siberia gas pipeline, along with the Chayandinskoye field in Yakutia. In terms of the size of its recoverable reserves, it is classified as unique: 1.8 trillion cubic meters of gas and 65.7 million tons of gas condensate.
