ULAN BATOR, April 26. /TASS/. During a visit to Mongolia, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron signed a memorandum on cooperation in the field of rare earth metals. This was reported by the Mongolian Foreign Ministry.
“During the visit of the head of the British Foreign Office to Mongolia, a roadmap for the development of cooperation in rare earth metals was presented. A memorandum on cooperation in the field of geology was signed with the Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry of the country Zhambalyn Ganbaatar,” the press service of the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
According to him, the conclusion of the memorandum will open up opportunities for cooperation in conducting detailed studies of Mongolia’s mineral resources, exchanging scientific information in the field of geology and training specialists. For this purpose, the memorandum was signed by the geological services of the two countries.
“Also, Mongolian Foreign Minister Batmunkhin Battsetseg discussed with her British counterpart the expansion of cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, culture, education, tourism, e-government and signed a roadmap to bring cooperation to a comprehensive partnership level,” the Foreign Ministry noted.
The main minerals mined in Mongolia are non-ferrous and rare earth metals, gold, silver, uranium, and coal. As of 2022, Mongolian geologists have discovered four deposits of rare earth metals, and there may be about 80 of them in the country. This has sparked interest in them in recent years from the United States and South Korea. Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh expressed readiness to explore the deposits in cooperation with the Russian Federation during his visit to Moscow in January 2022.
