Diamonds of unusual shape: Severalmaz extracted New Year’s crystals at the Lomonosov deposit

On New Year’s Eve, two unique diamonds resembling Christmas decorations were mined at the Severalmaz processing plant (part of ALROSA). One of the crystals, weighing 17.03 carats, resembles a Christmas ball in shape, and the second, a diamond weighing 2.7 carats, is surprisingly similar to a puppy figurine.

At the Lomonosov deposit in the Arkhangelsk region, such finds are becoming a good tradition. Earlier, in 2024, a herringbone—shaped diamond was extracted here, and in 2023, a 38-carat Cloudberry crystal named after the northern berry was extracted. In 2022, experts discovered a 39.98 carat diamond jewelry that resembles a butterfly.

According to Ilya Zezin, Chief geologist at Severalmaz, the deposit is unique.:
“It consists of six kimberlite pipes containing more than 250 million tons of diamond-bearing ore. Diamonds are distinguished by their rounded shape, multiple facets, and rare morphological features. Such finds are not only of scientific interest, but also of aesthetic value.”

Mining at the Lomonosov deposit regularly brings crystals of unusual shapes and colors, which makes it one of the most interesting objects for specialists in the field of geology and jewelry.
