The company’s vice president for federal and regional programs, Andrei Grachev, noted that scientific developments from previous years were used
MOSCOW, December 10. /TASS/. The Norilsk Nickel company has substituted 132 units of imported equipment and parts during the construction of a sulfur capture complex at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant in Norilsk. This was announced by the company’s vice president for federal and regional programs, Andrei Grachev, at the congress “Innovative Practice: Science Plus Business”.
“We have a Sulfur Program, which provides for a radical reduction in emissions in Norilsk: in 2026, this is 45%, and then about 95-97%. And when we were implementing this project, we were faced with the fact that we have 132 items of parts, equipment that actually needs to be imported,” Grachev said.
According to him, the company contacted the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which was very helpful, but Norilsk Nickel had to rely largely on its own efforts. At the same time, scientific developments from previous years were used.
The technologies adopted for the “Sulfur Program” allow capturing at least 99% of sulfur dioxide at the main smelting units where they are used, and take into account the features of the ore base of the Norilsk industrial region, the pyrometallurgical processes used, as well as the logistical limitations of Norilsk (lack of external rail communication, a limited navigation period along the Yenisei, an inter-navigation period in which there is only air communication, logistics conditions along the Northern Sea Route). Sulfur dioxide is utilized with the production of sulfuric acid and its subsequent neutralization with limestone with the production of gypsum.
